The number of dailies sold in the year leading up to the recessions of 1992 and 2001 followed the same pattern seen in 2007-2008.

In 1990 46 dailies exchanged hands, followed by 29 in 1991 and just 21 in 1992.

Similarly, in 2000 a record 135 dailies were sold, followed by only 22 in 2001.

This decline of 84% was closely mirrored in 2008 when the number of dailies to change hands dropped 82% from the year before.
