Deal Signed for Sale of Freedom’s Phoenix-Area NewspapersBack to News


PHOENIX, February 16, 2010 – Freedom Communications has signed a definitive agreement to sell its publishing operations in Phoenix to 1013 Communications, LLC, a new company formed to buy the publications.

Freedom has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware seeking approval of the sale, which it hopes to complete in March.

Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper merger-and-acquisition firm in Santa Fe, New Mexico, represented Freedom in the transaction.

The transaction includes the Pulitzer Prize-winning East Valley Tribune, the Sun City Daily News-Sun, Ahwatukee Foothills News, Glendale/Peoria Today and Surprise Today, as well as related websites.

The partners in the acquiring company include Randy Miller, owner of Thirteenth Street Media. Thirteenth Street Media owns suburban newspapers in Tucson and newspaper operations in Telluride, Colorado.
