Quincy Media to Acquire Hannibal (MO) Courier-PostBack to News

QUINCY, IL – May 13, 2019 – Family-owned Quincy Media Inc. has agreed to acquire the Hannibal (MO) Courier-Post, which is located across the Mississippi River from Quincy’s daily newspaper, television and radio operations.

Dirks, Van Essen, Murray & April, a media merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, represented Quincy Media in the transaction. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

GateHouse Media has owned the Hannibal newspaper since 2007, when it acquired the publication as part of a larger deal with Morris Publishing Group. Quincy Media operates the daily Herald-Whig and WGEM-TV/Radio headquartered in Quincy, Illinois among other media operations around the country.

“This purchase helps us advance our mission of producing the highest-quality journalism and serving the interests of our local communities,” said fifth-generation newsman Ralph M. Oakley, president and CEO of Quincy Media. “We feel the Courier-Post will shine as one of Missouri’s finest local newspapers.”

The transition will bring ownership closer to the Hannibal community, said Ron Wallace, Quincy’s vice president of newspapers and the Herald-Whig’s publisher. Quincy is about a 30-minte drive to Hannibal, and the Courier-Post will help Quincy Media build its regional presence, Wallace said.

Quincy Media is among the largest local journalism companies in the country. It began as Quincy Newspapers Inc. in 1926 when two Quincy newspapers merged to create the Herald-Whig. It has since moved into broadcast news and changed its names to Quincy Media in 2016 with properties in 16 television markets.

GateHouse Media publishes more than 140 daily newspapers, 340 community publications and 570 local market websites in 37 states.
